The SLMR Mail Server
General information
POP3 Server name: slmr.com
SMTP Server name: slmr.com
- Your login name is always your lastname plus the first letter of your firstname
plus your middle initial to form one word as in lastnamefm. If
two people would have the same login name (ie. Susan E Smith and Stan E Smith),
the newer person's login name would add the first 2 letters of the middle
name, so Stan Everett Smith becomes smithsev.
- NEVER use Outlook Express. The application is riddled with security
holes, and our security team has advised us that it is not safe for corporate
use, especially on Windows 95/98/ME systems.
- Outlook, Eudora, and Mozilla can all be setup for multiple mail if you
need two or more email accounts at the same time.
Security Reminders:
- Never leave your password where someone (especailly a client) could easily
find it
- Do not give your password out on the phone to anyone.
- It is best if your password is NOT a dictionary word or a proper name.
- Passwords should contain numbers, punctuation and mixed case. Try to think
of a rubric such as 3ZakroWd! (3's a crowd) that you can easily remember.
- Do not reply to junk mail (spam), even if you want to be removed
from their list. (ANY mail you send to them may be treated as verification
of your address and result in even more mail in the future.)
- Treat all email as though it were a public document with an infinite
life.
- If intercepted, anything you say could be used against you or your company.
- Do not send confidential information via email. Email on the Internet
can be intercepted or monitored by persons unknown.
- If your work requires a secure email account, ask your IT team for
help. Be aware that the person to whom you send secure email must also have
a secure email account, you both must use the same encryption/decryption settings
and the transmission path must be secured if the mail is to be safe.
AntiVirus
- All computers should have Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.6 (or newer)
installed.
- Open Norton and check that the most recent update of the Antivirus Definition
File is not more than a week old.
- If it is older, click the Live Update button to update, then click Files
on the toolbar, select Schedule Updates.
- The box to Enable automatic updates should be checked, and the text
below it should read Update virus definitions every day at ?:??
?M (where ? is your actual time).
- The time should NOT be set to a time when your computer is usually turned
off! and it should NOT be set to weekly!
- To change click Schedule, make frequency Daily, and reset the
time, then click OK.
- Click OK again, then Exit and you are done.
Setting up email software
Eudora
- Eudora is the preferred email software.
- It is normally installed in sponsored mode, but it is possible to upgrade
to the full version if the nature of your work demands.
- Eudora users with Windows 2000 you must use Eudora version 5.2 (or
newer) so you can get to your mailbox.
Mozilla Mail
- Mozilla mail & newsgroups software is available for those who wish to
use an integrated mail/newsreader/browser package.
- Mozilla is the open source version of Netscape Navigator.
- Mozilla version 1.2+ has many of the same features as Netscape 6, without
the advertising.
- Mozilla will always start with the Navigator web browser window open.
- Click on Window, Mail & Newsgroups on the toolbar to launch mail.
Outlook
- Microsoft Outlook 2000 has been installed on many computers as part of Office
2000
- Outlook was designed to work with Exchange Server
- Since we do NOT use Exchange Server, there is no special benefit to
the use of Outlook, and since there are well known security risks to the
use of Outlook, Eudora is recommended.
